Glagoslav is a publishing house based in the UK and The Netherlands whose appreciation of the important place Slavic literature holds within world culture have led them to build a unique position in the market. Glagoslav publishes contemporary fiction and non-fiction by authors from Slavic countries, including republishing valuable older works and translations.
We have been working on a magnificent editing and marketing project in 2021 for Glagoslav. A Dutch translation of children’s literature by Ineke Zijlstra-Nanninga, the book is titled “De Zwarte Kip of Het Volk Onder De Grond“. Originally written in 1829, and cited by Lev Tolstoy as “a favorite from his childhood”, the book tells a fantastic story about little Alyosha and a kingdom underground where he is taken by the chicken he saved out of the hands of the cook who prepared the next meal for the boys’ boarding school. Alyosha is granted a wish by the king of that underground realm, but ends up learning a valuable lesson.
In order to do effective proofreading and copy editing, we have immersed ourselves to the world of Alyosha from a child’s perspective. The translator had done a great job and we are happy to have taken part in the realization of this valuable children’s literature.
Special attention goes out to the illustrator of the publication, Ivanna Hodak, for her exceptional illustrating style. Her artwork have given the story a visual character, and makes this book even more speaking to the minds of the little ones. Clavis Aurea has marketed “De Zwarte Kip of Het Volk Onder De Grond” with enthusiasm and is looking forward to make more children’s literature possible in the future.
